The Very First Songs
Released Friday 25th July 2025
‘The Very First Songs’ were written in the second half of 2023 in my flat in Queen Square in Glasgow. They are the first songs I ever finished, the songs I brought with me to my first open mics and the songs I played at my first ever gig, supporting India Blue at the Rum Shack.
I recorded them at Gloworm Recording in Glasgow with Ross Saunders (Federation of the Disco Pimp) engineering, Stephen Jack (Theo Bleak, Nimbus Sextet) on bass and Harris LeDerf (Kubitaru) on drums. I mixed the tracks and added further production in my wee DIY studio in rural Aberdeenshire where I also designed the artwork. Dilate was inspired by therapy and things I’d like to say to my younger self trying to be creative amidst high school. Both ‘Catch Up’ and ‘Dash’ explore some heavier feelings in the verses and a sense of hope or self-guidance in the choruses.
There’s been a real sense of apprehension putting these songs out and I must have said I could have done this or that better a thousand times, but in some way as I’m writing this I realise that maybe in a way it’s nice that despite being a completely new to songwriting I said fuck it got a band together and just recorded the first songs I came up with. And here they are, with you now.
